SOVEREIGN ST TRACKPLAN

Is this the current plan or a new proposed one. If it is a new plan it will be very interesting to warch it being developed.

The final one for both steam engines and diesel engines running. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steam Train Services It is 1914 to 1919.

A -- Fiddle Yard. Is Earlsheaton Junction, Wetherby and East Seacroft on the line that passes Wyndham Farm.
The line over the bridge to the Fiddle Yard is Kirkstall, Kirkstall Forge and Leeds LNWR Passenger and Goods Station – B -- Diesel Engine Shed. C -- Scholarsgate Station. D -- Sovereign Street Station and Yard.

1 - Wyndham Farm. 2 -- The Ash Farm Fields. 3 -- J H Thompson Builders Merchants. 4 -- Marston's Scrap Merchants and house.

5 -- Small Industrial Estate. 6 -- The Bridge. 7 -- North Road. 8 -- Winterwood Manor.

There are three Railway Companies that run through Sovereign Street. Calder Railway, Leeds Scarcroft and Wetherby Railway and Kirkstall and East Seacroft Railway.

Calder Railway Services are:-

Passenger Services from Earlsheaton Junction passing Wyndham Farm, Ash Farm Fields and stopping at Scholarsgate. They then continue to Sovereign Street. Their final stop is Leeds LNWR Station. The return services are in reverse.

Goods Services are:-

Goods from around the country; mainly Lancashire and West Yorkshire arrive at Earlsheaton Junction and travel the same line to Sovereign Street (not stopping at Scholarsgate Station).
Wagons are then shunted to the required Companies in the yard..
Through Goods Trains continue to Leeds LNWR Goods Yard.
The return services are in reverse.

Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway Services are :-

Passenger Services from Kirkstall stopping at Sovereign Street. The train then takes the line behind North Road and Winterwood Manor, passes Wyndham Farm and on to East Seacroft.
(Passengers are mainly Barnbow Munitions Factory staff.)
Return services in reverse.

Goods traffic is all from Kirkstall Forge and T & J Harrison (Sovereign Street) and it all goes to Barnbow, the same route as passenger services
Return traffic in reverse.

Leeds, Scarcroft & Wetherby Railway services

Goods traffic is from the north and travels on K&ESR metals to Sovereign Street and LNWR Goods Yard (Leeds). Some goods go to The Blackburn Aircraft Factory at Olympia Works, Roundhay, Leeds.

Passenger trains travel the same route.

The factories at Sovereign Street are --

1) Town Tailors. The name Town Tailors came from when my Uncles would ask my Grandmother to make some clothes for 'her boys'. My Grandmother was a wonderful tailoress. The clothes she made were 'made to last' and did.
On Sovereign Street they have a contract to supply uniforms for the Forces.

2) Smith & Butler's printers Smith & Butler's were (may still be I do not know) printers of wallpaper and were based on Harehills Road in Leeds.. They were part of The Crown Wallpaper Company. My first job on leaving school was here.
On Sovereign Street they have a contract for stationery supplies for HM Government.

3) Hey & Humphreys bottlers Hey & Humphreys used to bottle barrels of Guinness and distribute the bottles around Yorkshire.Whether they bottled any other Brewers' beer I do not know. The happy memories, as from the age of five to the age of nine or ten, to earn some pocket money at three Clubs I would put the empty beer bottles back into their crates. I handled 'hundreds' of bottles of beer. :D  I valued the money I earned and saved it to buy the 'special things'.
On Sovereign Street Hey & Humphreys bottle beer for different Companies. An ale wagon is often parked outside the building.

4) Brown & White's Metal Workers._- to be renamed Fairbairn, Lawson, Combe & Barbour. Fairbairn Lawson were actually on Wellington Street in Leeds and made textile machinery. In wartime they changed to making munitions and gun barrels.

5) Hudson Ward Flour Millers Their premises were very near to the real Sovereign Street in Leeds. The drivers would collect grain from Hull or Liverpool and bring it to Leeds to make flour. I remember at the age of four to about seven being taken to see the road wagons and talking to the drivers and management. At odd times drivers (after asking my Uncle) would take me to either Hull and Liverpool. Great times.
On Sovereign Street they receive daily, consignments of grain and have their own rail wagons.

6) T & J Harrison Small Arms Manufacturers T & J Harrison are family members and are involved in a small way in small arms and ammunition. They are still young. Perhaps their business will grow. :)
On Sovereign Street they have their own rail wagons and cases of small arms and ammunition can be seen on the loading dock.

Sovereign Street is a busy yard

I mention my steam trains running to Barnbow. Although the railway is fictitious, Barnbow actually existed. For a short while I lived and worked about a mile away from the factory.
Barnbow munitions blast factory site given heritage status - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-37586686

There is a memorial to 'The Barnbow Lasses' in Manston Park, Leeds.

and Blackburn Aircraft Co at Roundhay in Leeds

WELL DONE on two counts.

Firstly for posting your excellent pics and secondly for the layout itself, it is great. :D

You can also post images from your Boats and Canals albums on NRM following the same procedure I have disabled watermarks.

I get inspired by you layout and Maurice's - you both pack in so much detail. Mine is a bit broad brush I think. Cheers Graham

Don't 'knock' your layout, Graham. It looks great. I wish I had your space for my layout.

All I have done is little cameos around the layout. Things I have seen etc. to make a larger scene. Just do not go looking for the faults. There are many,  but I am pleased with the overall picture.

As previously mentioned, on the layout Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway Co run trains to Barnbow Munitions Factory. Looking at further information, not only was it staff and munitions that entered and left the factory; they had their own farm. Cattle and horses were there.

http://www.barwickinelmethistoricalsoci ... /4746.html

Kirkstall & East Seacroft Railway Co have acquired a cattle wagon and is on its way from Earlsheaton Junction. Picture to follow.
