Maurice, I'm up on Ditterel on the Grand Union not on the Basingstoke, There have been lots of report on various canal groups about flooding but nothing from C&RT. I think they have been a little busy sorting out the problems.

Oh right, I didn't know that. I am getting quite a lot of updates etc from C&RT about problems of one kind or another and very often duplicates and some that are so mixed up I don't post them because the just don't make sense and some dates are also reversed etc. I think this backs up your comment that they are busy. I should imagine it is hard to keep up to date with everything especially with the mixed up weather that we are getting.

We are having a few days on the boat. Jo has been painting the loo walls in the front loo. I've been doing nothing much!

We went for a walk around the reservoir tonight. It is just so beautiful around here.

I've finished the wood liners for the rear doors and side hatch. I just need to finish painting them!

Jo is going to paint our bird mascot (it used to be on the side of the boat at the back) in the panels on the rear doors.

I've been doing more maintenance on the boat.

My neighbour Dale has been in the water tank. He has removed the old blocked metal pipes and replaced them with stiff rubber ones. In the winter he will do the whole thing in stainless steel but at least we are now OK for the summer.

So it was time to fill the tank, I bolted down the access hatch and then started filling using Dale's very long extension hose. It took 2 hours to fill but it meant I could fill it on our mooring.

I managed to do up all the various drain points so didn't flood the boat this year. I also replaced the ceramic water filter.

In the course of bleeding the taps some water was left in the bath. So I pumped it out................except the pump didn't work.

Rule one of fault finding is - What did you last mess with?

Well I'd been under the bath and the connection for the pump is under there.

So I checked volts at the connector and it was fine.

So I checked volts at the connector to the pump and it wasn't.

So, I thought, that dodgy bit of solid core cable that the boat should not have at all has broken.

Image

So I ripped out the cable from the trunking and up through the under sink cupboard until I got to the connector. That's when I discovered the reason I didn't have volts there was all the metal bits were covered in melted plastic.

Image

So I replaced the connector and the line to the switch.

Right, put the power back on and press the button..........click.

The pump was seized. I guess that is why the block melted as the current flow heated the next weakest point. Stalled DC motors draw a lot of current.

I had a spare pump so emptied the bath.

I also changed the engine oil, both oil filters (it has a bypass filter too) and the fuel filter.

In my various trips to the chandler I bought a new windlass.

By having 4 holes you can vary its length and fit both types of paddle gear.

Cheers Graham

It's getting close isn't it. I have a crew sorted out and even a route in mind!!!!

Things to do though - I need to think about better time lapse recording, bedding, food, alcohol, infinite crisp supplies.

Are you starting in the Old Turn Junction area again Laurie?

Cheers Graham

Hi Graham,

This year we hope to start at Bentley moorings on the Curly Wurley, then go to Tipton Saturday, then Hawne Basin Sunday. Three locks this time and 3 tunnels :)
Cheers
:)

It's 9:50 at night, we have just moored!

There we were on the boat, watching TV, with a glass if wine in hand when our neighbours asked for help.

Sam's boat should have gone down the locks to the wet dock to be worked on first thing tomorrow but it wouldn't start.

So we got the boat going, headed to Napton Junction to turn around and came back to Calcutt top lock where we breasted up to Sam's boat. Down the 3 locks to the marina entrance, we singled out to make the turn into the marina then headed across to the wet dock, we let Sam's boat go about two lengths away so she could drift into the dock entrance and we could back away to turn around in the middle of the marina. Then it was back up the locks with Dale doing most of the hard work. It went dark coming up the locks and the headlight proved surprisingly effective.

Jo steered throughout and did a stunning job getting a pair of boats into the locks.

Photos to follow.

Cheers Graham
