I was quite inspired, as a child, by P D Hancock's Craig and Mertenford Railway. I loved the narrow gauge and was actually a bit disappointed when he extended the standard gauge!

Image

I've decided to buck that trend and extend the narrow gauge part of my railway. I briefly toyed with the idea of doing away with the modern circuit altogether so that the narrow gauge can cross the suspension bridge.

The it struck me dual gauge track!

The climb on the modern circuit is a challenge for modern engines. (they don't have magnadesion). I have been know to employ a banker there and the DCC control lends itself to the concept. The narrow gauge will be rope worked and based upon one at Llanberis.

The wagons will load from the side rather than end on though. I may start on it in a few years!

Current project is a rather ornate tunnel mouth to match the castle.

It's been a busy day in the railway room. I had two willing helpers.

Before I start on that here is the new tunnel mouth in position, the castle is in its new home but will need blending into the scenary.

Image

My two grand kids have been busy.

This is Darcy painting some figures.

Image

This is Lexi drilling the hole for a Triang sign I acquired.

Image

This is the installed sign.

Image

They built a building with just a small amount of help from me (mostly the odd sharp knife bit).

Image

Darcy designed it and cut it out, Lexi fitted the windows, coloured the door and did the brick paper.

They are quite proud of it but apparently someone has used it and left a smell!

Image

They also made a couple of trees and Lexi got the hang of driving a train.

I've had a great afternoon!!!!

Cheers Graham

Progress continues. The castle is now blended into the hill and the ground awaits texture and bushes/trees.

Image

The duels gauge track is now laid through the cutting and works.

The ground texture and bushes have gone in:-

Image

There are a few things going on.

The man sitting on the log is being hunted by a bear. The sheep tried to tell him but said Baah when he meant Bear.

The Herald gong up the hill will need to give way to the bus.

The lady going up the steps to the castle is in for a shock as it has been hired by 3 artists who want to paint models 'au naturel'.

The next task is the retaining wall. I'm about to add arch effects to the front - this is going to take ages

Image

The loo on the platform is a bit public as you can see in from the bridge!

Cheers Graham

Maybe that is why she is going, :D

It looks like someone is already getting an eyeful on the bridge. :D

It s a quandary isn't it, you want it finished but then you start looking for something else to do.

I think that is why they say a model railway really is never finished. Carry on Graham. It is looking great.

I've made a start on building the arches for the retaining wall behind the new platform. I have to make another four and a half of these.

Image

The arches are about 5mm deep and the stones across the top of each arch are slightly raised. The top of the wall has separate capping stones.

Progress!!

I've finished the wall.

Image

I've also had a rush of blood to the head and redesigned the overall layout. It was just a bit too boring. The original plane was for a terminal/through station against one wall and trains could leave, run round, go round the loop and back. The new idea is to have the station coming across the room with a triangular junction so trains can leave in either direction and because of the reverse loop arrive in either direction. The modern circuit and narrow gauge go past the junction on a high level then they split with the narrow gauge returning via a loop and the standard crossing the work bench directly above one of the Triang main lines (it is double track).

This is the plan - this was produced by the Scarm tool http://www.scarm.info/index.php based upon Hornby geometry this is slightly different to Triang but close enough. Hence the tracks don't quite join up in the triangle. It has enabled me to plane the baseboard very accurately.

Image

Progress has been made on the board structure. The old sidings have gone - they were temporary but a little more temporary than I thought!

Image

The vertical wall and tunnel were never intended to be permanent so something needs doing. I fancy a chalk cliff like Guildford MPD used to have.

Image

It is interesting how the brick tunnel mouth sticks out of the chalk cliff.

Cheers Graham
