Hi
My husband and I have been looking around to buy a boat that would suit our needs luckily for us we found that boat today and will be paying for it tomorrow. The boat is a 22 ft cabin type cruiser and is currently on hard standing in a marina/ boat yard. We need to move the boat 51 miles away from where it is and placed nearer home in the water. Can anyone tell us how best to do this? There is no trailer with the boat but even if there was we don't have a tow bar are there companies out there that would do this if so who are they and what can I expect to pay for the move the boat comes with a number of certificates ie safety cert and I other. I don't think the boat has a current licence or even if these are transferable. The mooring where we would like to put our boat has a 1 yr waiting list So what are we best doing ? The boat could do with some cosmetic work so ideally the closer to home the better for the convenience of working on it at weekends the boat is ready to be put in the water so an apt ion would be to sail it home however how long would a boat take to cover 31 miles. And help and advice members could give us would be brilliant we have never owned a boat enforce so not even sure we would be able to drive it. Stop it in a emergency and stop it from crashing into the locks we don't even know what else we need to pay for before collecting it.
Thanks guys I'm sure these are basic questions I have done a lot of reading about boats but sill no the wissz

It all depends where you intend to move the boat from and to, which unfortunately you have not stated. Moving by road by a company could be an expensive option, but I have no experience of this, however I would have thought that moving it this way may be more expensive than by moving it by water. Moving it by water depends upon which waterways are involved. If it is all C&RT (Canal & River Trust) then the minimum you would require would be insurance, BSS (Boat Safety Scheme) certificiate, and C&RT licence, which cannot be obtained until you have the other 2 items. It is similar if the journey is through EA (Environment Agency) but requiring an EA licence instead. If the journey entails moving through both authorities then both licences would be required, although visitor licences are available for shorter periods than a full year to cover just passing through one authority. At the end of the day you will have to do all 3 things anyway, so would be cheaper to do this and move the boat by water, rather than adding on the cost of moving by road.

Moving by road would only be cheap if you can hire a trailer and move it yourself, providing you have a friend or relative who has a tow ball on their car as you do not.

There are many insurance companies that insure boat, Google "boat insurance"

Towing by road trailer is the best option, but here is the regulations you need to be aware of.

To get your boat moved by a professional boat mover by canal/river is about £60 a day.

Good Luck with your venture. I Hope this information is of some use to you and please, do not hesitate to ask for further information if you feel the need to.

Can I also, please ask you to let us know how you get on, with the move and the proposed 'cosmetics'

Hope that everything goes as planned.
