I think it's a Trilby, my other hats are a Triumph baseball cap and a cowboy hat. I like hats too. I did have a leather flying helmet. Perhaps I should get a Fedrora? Cheers Graham

On my last canal holiday we found this stuck in a tree, it looked as though someone had gone through the trees and lost it. Was it either you Graham or Mike?

If it was sorry, we didn't keep it.

What was funny Graham was that we left it in full view at a lock just in case anyone claimed it. When we got to the next lock we had to wait a short while and a boat following thought that we had forgotten it and brought it back to us. :D

Sitting on the boat in the sun. I've just repaired my oil extractor so may suck out the engine oil shortly. Mind you I may just drink coffee. Cheers Graham

We are back from our trip to Banbury.

Day 1 a short day!

We arrived at the boat and went down to the water point - the bows were up about 2 inches before we began so it took a fair while to fill up. We turned above Calcutt top lock and went as far as the Bridge Inn at Napton. The Inn has just re-opened but we stayed on board.

The visitor moorings are quite close to the winding hole.

Day 2

Up Napton Locks - a wall on lock 10 has collapsed and one of the bottom paddles didn't work. We waited above the bottom lock for an hour then finally got going. We moored beneath Maston Doles locks for lunch before completing our climb up to the summit level.

Day 3

A very pleasant cruise up to the Wharf Inn at Fenny Compton, the moorings were full but we managed to find a piece of acceptable bank just after the marina. Lunch was not too good. My cappuccino had been made with sour milk and Jo's' lunch had sloppy mash with lumps and overcooked veg.

We went on through the old tunnel and down Claydon locks, there is a very pleasant mooring just beneath the locks.

Day 4

On to Banbury, we saw this boat which, until recently, had been under water - it is called Hesperus and was built in 1936 by Walker Brothers.

Image

We also passed Clattercote Wharf which always has something of interest to see.

We stopped for coffee at the Wild Damson Cafe at Cropredy - it is on the green just the other side of the church. The cream tea (lunch?) was good.

Then onto Banbury where we moored near the Spice Ball Park.

Day 5

We turned beneath Banbury town lock and came back to moor in the centre for shopping and coffee.

Banbury has some interesting buildings.

We left Banbury and stopped at Bourton Lock for a guidsed tour of the lock cottage. It is being restored.

There is no road access, the old lady who used to live there used a boat to go to Banbury for shopping. It is in a very bad state but the owner is doing a good job and intends to live there with his family.

We moored at Cropredy on the 14 day moorings. A boat arrived in front of us with some dodgy looking types who set up a very loud music kit on the roof and turned up the volume. I didn't fancy a discussion with them!! So we moved to the 48 hour moorings above the lock - very peaceful.

Day 6

Back up to the summit level where we stopped to pump out the loos at the self service pump out at Fenny, one worked, one didn't not sure why. I think I need Calcutt to use their big pump on it. We moored for the night just about where HS2 is going to cross the canal.

Day 7

Set off in torrential rain with weather warnings for thunder and headed for Napton locks. The weather cleared up and we came down the locks in 1 hr 37 minutes. We turned the corner for the last half mile to our mooring when the rain and thunder came. We got soaked.

Cheers Graham

Firstly it great to see that you are both on the move again and thanks for the photographs :D

Day 4: We also passed Clattercote Wharf which always has something of interest to see. - This looks like the trailer that Fred Dibanah used with his traction engine.

Day 5: - Wise to move on, rather than to spoil your cruise.

I've just been up to the boat, we got the loo pumped out (the one that failed at Fenny Compton) and filled up with diesel. We had used quite a lot generating since we moved to the new mooring. But ... now Calcutt have fitted the electricity supply so the boat is back on mains power and the batteries are happier.

I learnt a bit about pump outs - the correct technique is to only partially open the valve.

I wanted to fit a yale lock to the back door so we can get into the boat from the back deck when the door is locked. Previously it was bolted from the inside and if the Grandkids were with us we couldn't get to the back cabin in the evening without disturbing them.

I took my hippy niece, Claire, with me for the day - she has been looking after my Mum and it was a nice break for her.

We popped down the lock visited the wharf, went back up the lock and stopped on the water point. There was an Willow Wren training boat out which moored for lunch opposite the winding hole!! I suppose in their defense it isn't actually marked as one but clearly they were not training common sense.

We hadn't filled the boat during our week out so it took a while, the bows were up 2 inches so that is about half a ton of water.

We decided to cruise to Braunston and back with Claire steering and me doing the DIY. I covered myself in sun block, she claimed she lives out side so much she didn't need it., I was fine she had a burnt nose!

She was happy though.

Back on the mooring we met our neighbours and then set off home in my TR7 - it is missfiring badly when hot. I think I need to replace the waxstat jets with the plain ones. Waxstats were rubbish when new and now at 33 years old .....

I am planning on restuffing the sofa bed and went to an interesting place in High Wycombe to try out different foam, Claire had been there for her van - she is useful. They are cutting it to size so we should be more comfortable when we take the Grand kids out in 2 weeks.

Cheers Graham

I've just rebuilt the sofa bed. the old padding had become very flat and uncomfortable and the arm fell off. I fixed the arm with brackets and steel screws and have bought a nice set of foam cushions to form the bottom, back and filler piece. This has raised the seating position and means you don't feel the wooden bars and increased the bed to 4 feet 6 in. We have the Grandkids with us on Sunday and they get our cabin so the mods to the sofa are just in time.

The design of the arm was rubbish relying on 3 brass screws to resist the bending moment when you leant on it.

My niece took me up to the boat using her white van to carry the foam as it wouldn't fit in my car. Persuading the tip that we weren't a commercial vehicle when got rid of the old one was fun. Her hippy looks helped!

We had a very pleasant evening sitting by the boat looking over the reservoir, drinking beer and watching the sun go down.

I'll post when I can whilst we are out, we are just popping up to Rugby again as there is lots of things for the kids to do that way.

Cheers Graham
