The Sankey Canal Restoration Society (SCARS) was formed in 1985, with the help and encouragement of the St. Helens Groundwork Trust. The principal aim of the Society is to achieve the full restoration of the Canal. To bring this about, the Society actively publicises and promotes the cause of the Canal.

They are currently commissioning a new website which they say, will hopefully bring news of all our activity up to date.

I will post a link to the new website when it is online but in the meantime this is their current site with relevant contact details: http://www.scars.org.uk/index.html

The Sankey canal is often referred to as Sankey Brook and the St.Helens Canal.

I am not sure if this society is still active.

Their website has not been updated for a number of years and their last Annual Report and Newsletter was in 2010. To date, the promised new website has not materialised.

It's such a shame this was a very important canal and a very active society. If anyone has any news to the contrary please let me know.

Many thanks CKP that's good news on two fronts and they are still in operation.

I wonder why they seem to have forsaken their website.

Further to this after browsing the internet for news on the canal rather than the society I have found that there are various projects either on the go or being planned.

I suppose one of the problems with the restoration of the 17 miles of canal is that it is largely owned by Halton, Warrington and St Helens unitary authorities, with small parts owned by Canal & River Trust and Pilkington plc.
