I've got plans! Low maintenance is the key. It won't be a ground level line but will now involve some gradients, small bridges, very short tunnels and a rockery! I'm going to draw it up on Scarm and will let you know. My tame handy man (he does all the jobs my rather tired body can't) will do the ground works. We are looking at a long programme through probably not built until this time next year.

Cheers Graham

Progress, the site has been surveyed and a plan drawn up on Scarm. This is it - it is quite simple but with the cross loop section and the reversing branch should be fun.

Great news Graham.

This may be of some help when building your incline.

Thanks Maurice the gradient on the branch is 4% so should be OK I think.

This is the site.

The table and chairs will be in the middle of the circuit with the high level reversing loop nearest the camera. The passing loop will be next to the wall so it will be easy to put the trains on the track bed about 33 inches above the path by the conservatory.

Idea's needed - Maurice - the new railway will need a raised track bed in a few places. Any ideas how to build it and make it look nice. I have in my mind's eye a nice stone edged track bed with track set into ballast on the top. I did toy with the idea of casting rock faces in concrete. Fake cotswold stone bricks are available but I think they are a little to deep from back to front.

Cheers Graham

What is the maximum height that you are thinking of? I will have a think and post some ideas, I promise within a few days.

You say that you toyed with the idea of casting rock faces in concrete, this looks good after a while when it gets weathered and possibly some moss on it, even some small plants in the crevices, (some very small weeds can be ideal), and if cracks due to the weather it is easily repaired,

The plan has changed slightly based upon a better garden survey. The branch gradient has been eased. I costed the track from an on line site and was a bit gob smacked at the total price - in excess of £1000. EBay here we come! The plan is to build the lower level first and proceed with the branch as funds permit.

Cheers Graham

Have you tried Amazon.

I will have some used surplus but I am not sure when or how much, or even if it's suitable. Again that will be Chris' department, I don't have an e-bay account.

I did have a look on Amazon, much the same answer I am afraid. I will get second hand track as it comes available. Fortunately all the trains are batter or steam so I don't have to be too fussy. Maurice if you do get any spare let me know and we can do a deal!

Cheers Graham

OK will do, I should know in a couple of weeks, I will list it for you, it is a mixture of LGB and Aristocraft but they are both compatible with each other, there are quite a few points as well. We can side track e-bay if there is anything you want.
