So that's where they dumped the Skylon after the 1951 Festival of Britain.

It was like a skylon that has gone to seed. Fatter! We are moored at the bottom of Hillmorton Locks.

Cheers Graham

I went to the 1951 Festival, too young to remember it though.

Just the opposite with me, I didn't go, but I do remember little bits about it. :D

We are now at Hawkesbury just past the junction and facing north on the Coventry canal. There is a fascinating garden just before Hawkesbury with very interesting abandoned cars.

We are sitting outside the Greyhound pub watching boats make a few mistakes on the 180 degree turn at the junction. Jo did it perfectly of course. Cheers Graham

Moored in Nuneaton, we just made it to Costa before the rain started. Now sitting in the cratch and wondering whether or not to move into the open country about 30 mins away. Cheers Graham

We moored, the rain wasn't too bad, now near Hartshill, into Atherstone tomorrow and then down the locks. Cheers Graham

We filled up with water at Hartshill maintenance yard this morning. Interesting place.

Pausing for refreshment in Atherstone we went down the locks.

We were intending to go to Birmingham but Jo doesn't feel able to face the large number of locks so we have turned around and will head slowly home.

Cheers Graham

We have now decided to fit in a quick visit to Coventry. We do like cities but I think we need a bigger crew to get to Brum. When the Grandkids are a bit older then who knows!

Cheers Graham

Back up Atherstone locks. They use to have side pounds - they were in use when I came down them in 1975. Not anymore.

Image

I met a very grumpy unpleasant person with a very posh boat.

I then met a very nice couple with a very tatty boat.

At lock 8, the only one with a working side pound which we are not allowed to use, I met a nice chatty gent who told me how he almost sank his boat in Wigan flight when he opened a gate paddle too soon.

At lock 5 I met a working pair who I tried to get on the BCN challenge.

Image

There was another working boat at the top. They had all been to Shakerstone festival.

Image

We had coffee and lunch in Atherstone and are now moored between Hartshill and Nuneaton.

Cheers Graham

After dinner last night we went for a stroll down the canal and had a look at the remains of the quarrying industry. The old quarry faces are covered in trees and it is not obvious what you are looking at. There was a helpful board nearby which explained it all. I like the old railway built sometime around 1910.

It has been a day of slow boats today. Very slow. We are moored near Hawkesbury and may be tempted by the beer at the Greyhound.

Cheers Graham
