Christmas Day 2006

For the boat we got:-
A Bog Brush
A Dustpan and Brush
Two door mats
A 14 inch flat screen TV which turns out to have a 12v input. ( just need a device to protect it from varying voltage now)
A hot water bottle for Jo.

Off to the boat with it all tomorrow! Yay!!!!!

Boxing Day 2006

We decided to have a short cruise, out on boxing day and back the next. Braunston seemed a reasonable destination. After a fairly late start from home we arrived at the boat at 12:00. We were pleased to see all the plumbing intact and rather stunned that our greenhouse heaters had only used £1.40 in 9 days of quite cold weather. Once we got everything switched on and had lunch we were off. Jo managed a neat backward departure and got out onto the canal in a a very professional style. The exit from Calcutt is a bit hard. We shared the locks with a nice chap travelling single handed. He was a bit of a veteran. We chatted about his solar panel which works great in the summer but no so good now. His boat didn't seem to be named - maybe it was Clint Eastwood?

The cruise to Braunston was uneventful and we moored on the puddle banks as darkness fell. I had intended on mooring just around the corner but fortunately changed my mind as there was no space at all. We wandered up to Braunston in the dark but the pubs were packed with people and weren’t quite what we were after. On the way back just on the entry to the puddle banks there are towpaths on both sides and a voice called out, through the dark, from the opposite bank asking for advice on pubs, we sent him to the one with some space. Telling him to head for the flood lit church and keep going.

That evening we tried out the telly but unfortunately as soon as we switched it on, the portable inverter cut out. We are getting a 2 volt drop down the wires with telly. We tried the rear cabin but found the socket didn't work. Our son had to survive a night with only an MP3 player for company! We read books.

The next day we set off and Jo made a neat 3 point turn around the island at Braunston. A very cold trip back ensued. We made an ace entry into the marina, tried going right the way round the island for a better shot at out berth and blew it completely. Second time round the island we made it.

A cold trip but fun and we've got to know the boat a bit more.

Cheers Graham
