Gearbox is excellent. We filled up with diesel and I was a little surprised to find we had done 12.6 lock miles to the gallon in the challenge week. Normally we get around 9. I think the lock to mile balance may have caused this.

I bought a new front fender for the boat, the old one had died after Brum.

One evening we walked down the locks and found this.

I tried to take a photo of the wharf on to which Jo had so successfully backed.

Anyway you get the idea, out of the lock , swing in towards the towpath then start reversing to end up next to the red boat. All this with happy holiday makers looking on. They were impressed - I know I was.

Cheers Graham

The down side of Jo's liking for steering is I never get to drive through locks and only tend to steer first thing in the morning.

I am having a new sliding hatch and new side doors as the old ones had rusted quite badly. I've just heard that the sheet metal work is done.

Cheers Graham

I have a folding trolley for things like gas bottles. Unfortunately the folding mechanism involves two gears made from mild steel, One stripped completely so I made another.

The trolley wheels now do not run straight..

I've added a bracing rod with a nut on one end and a wingnut at the other and now it is fine.

Just been up on the boat again. We decided to fill up with water as the bow was up a few inches. Jo reversed all the way down to the water point to save gong to the junction turning, coming back onto the water point, turning...

They have been resurfacing the towpath near the locks and must have had some left over as they have done the water point too. The only snag is the deep stone makes it difficult to put any reasonable amount of pull on a rope - indeed I've noticed everyone walks on the grass as the gravel is too uncomfortable.

I've just had a new hatch and side doors manufactured by our neighbour Dale (the one that fixed the rudder). He is a partner in Direct Marine Components Limited. I can't find thier website at the moment but they do have Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/directmarinecomponents.

The hatch is made from quite heavy gauge steel and doesn't need the wood to support it like the old one did. I have fitted a wood lining which also serves as part of the bearing surface.

This is the inside.

The side doors are still in primer as the weather turned on me. They have a nice recessed panel effect.
