While we were on the boat I managed to fix the socket at the back so we can run the pure sine wave inverter again and put the cratch cover back on. It wasn't an entire waste of time. We do want to do some more gardening and cut another hole through the brambles so we can see the reservoir from the front cabin. Cheers Graham

We are moored just above Hillmorton Locks. Weather gorgeous, down the locks tomorrow. I have a few pics but they will have to follow when I get home. Cheers Graham

Are you doing the Warwickshire ring?

No, just a quick trip to rugby and back. We'll be doing a longer cruise later but doubt Jo and I would want to do Hatton by ourselves. Cheers Graham

I don't blame, I think you are amongst many others with that thought :)

We've done Hatton a few times, twice with just Jo and I but given a choice I would go somewhere else.

We left Hillmorton this morning, went down the locks, after 15 mins gave up at the slow water point , moored on the visitor moorings and went to the cafe. After coffee we stopped at a boat selling home made wine, tried a few samples and bought a couple of bottles. Then on to Rugby for more coffee and a bun. Then up to the winding hole at the entrance to the old arm leading to Rugby Wharf. Back up the locks starting at 5:10, a very pleasant warm evening with the locks to ourselves. We are now moored back where we started this morning but facing the other way. We have just come back from the Royal Crown after a nice meal and a beer. Cheers Graham

Hatton locks are one of the most horrible flights I have come across. Why can't they change the winding gear?

We are back at Calcutt, we stopped at Braunston and had fish and chips in the Plough. Today I've been gardening - improving our view of the reservoir. Photos to follow later when I get home. Cheers Graham

Now it's time for some happy snaps.

I always like evening shots and this one shows off our new gap in the vegetation next to the boat

Image

Hillmorton Locks are all paired and they used to act as side pounds for each other to save water. This is the defunct mechanism to open the paddle between the two locks.

Image

There is a pair of old cast iron lock gates arranged as a 'feature' at the bottom of Hillmorton Locks

Image

The obligatory moored boat shot. This is on Braunston Puddle Banks. It is one of the straightened sections on the Oxford Canal and has those odd slopping stone sides to rub the corner off your hull. It is an official visitor mooring though. We always have a choice in this direction - moor on the puddle banks or risk not getting a mooring on the popular bits after the junction.

Image

Braunston Junction is great fun, we went left here it is blind, you have to steer quite carefully to get round and straight afterwards is a bend to the right with visitor moorings on the left and a water point on the right. On the way back we had to squeeze between moored boats and a boat on the water point, we missed the one of the water point with the bows by about 2 inches and just missed the moored boat with the stern by about 6 inches. On a previous trip I couldn't get the boat through without stopping dead and pushing the bows across by hand!

Leaving Hillmorton Locks

Image

And finally me showing off my new, tasteful shirt.

Cheers Graham
