I haven't seen a top lock gate on an angle like this one, but I can't say it's wrong. Is it correct or is the model manufacturer using his own idea of creativity?

On checking the photograph, why is the gate on an angle but the housing for it to close into isn't. Wouldn't this cause undue wear on the edge of the gate, and possible cause leaks. |

That's got to be wrong? Matching the angle of the cill to the gate would also make fitting a watertight gate so much harder. I've certainly never seen a single top gate that wasn't perpendicular to the side walls of the lock. I think Graham's right. The modelmaker had a spare wide-beam gate and couldn't be bothered to make a smaller one to fit the narrow lock. The boat also seems to be to the wrong scale? Too much gap either side and not long enough! |

I think I will e-mail the manufacturer in a few days with the comments made and ask for a response to them. He possibly doesn't realise that there are errors with his locks. |

I have sent a query and will post the response, if I get one. Meanwhile I need to look for some suitable lock gates in N scale for a narrow canal. There are some here that may be suitable if there are no fiddly bits to assemble. http://www.langleymodels.co.uk/acatalog ... s__52.html |

In case it helps, here is a photograph I found associated with Google Earth showing the lock in question, and also an image from Google Earth itself. Both appear to show a conventional single top gate.   There's also a photo of Tapton Lock on this blog, from the narrowboat Holderness: http://nbholderness.blogspot.co.uk/2014 ... field.html

Thank you Thumper. I wonder if the photograph used for the model had a slightly open gate and the model make assumed that's how it should be not realising the error. I also wonder just how many people have bought this model not knowing about locks and perhaps even more embarrassing putting it in a display layout and having it commented on at exhibitions. |
