Ignoring the fact that the engines all have 4 driving wheels only then it is 23 on the basis that this engine in the 1923 GWR re-numbering scheme had 4 driving wheels (plus 4 carrying wheels) whereas the others all had 6 driving wheels and 2 carrying wheels.

Not that I believe this is right!

Cheers Graham
Ha Ha, you are quite right it is not that.

No, whilst the livery is a factor, it is not the key factor.

Let's assume that all locos are green with a brass steam dome etc, there is still a major factual difference with the odd one out.

You will eventually get the correct loco simply by elimination, so, please give me the reason why Great Western 101 is the odd one out. It is nothing to do with the livery, appearance or body shell.

Hint: Google and the Hornby Railways Collector Guide site can give you the answer.

Great Western 101 was a unique 0-4-0T and was originally built as an oil burning locomotive to demonstrate the economies of oil burning technology.

No. 101 employed a complex firebox and valve gear. The locomotive was intended for light passenger service on the Wrington Vale Light Railway near Bristol. Due to technical issues associated with design the locomotive never left Swindon Works where she languished until 1905, at which time GWR made the decision to rebuild the locomotive as a conventional coal burning tank engine.

As a non-standard design the locomotive appears to have been with-drawn and scrapped in 1911 and as such only ever appeared in the Great Western early livery.

Correct Keith, but you knew that didn't you :D

Hornby have produced many copies of this loco in fictitious liveries so part of the answer is also that 101 (Hornby R077) was the only locomotive built.
