The floor and door are finished, the roof is lined but I still need to paint it. Hopefully I'll do that tomorrow.

I now have my father's old stereo in the railway room (not garage anymore!). It is 22 years old but sounds divine. The neighbours are going to hate me.

I had planned to put the bikes next to the door with the two ladders against the wall. Then it occurred to me that I could put two folding bikes (we have too many bikes) under the railway next to the door and slide the ladders under the railway at the side. This gives me a couple of feet more room for railway.

So today I modified the bracing on the canal section so that it is braced at the front (the bikes come in from the rear) and added a long wide chipboard shelf under the existing station so I can slide the ladders over the bracing between the legs. I also modded the back scene supports to allow for my painted back scene to slide in behind the existing scenery

I have spent all day doing woodwork and no time doing railway but it is all moving in the right direction.

Cheers Graham

Firstly, you can never have too many bikes.

All sounds well planned right down to the music, that is important. I also like the name change to the Railway Room, excellent. :D

My sister is a keen cyclist and competes in various forms of cycling. She says that the correct number of bikes is n+1 where n is the number of bikes you have. This rule applies at all times.

The low level station and the canal scene are back together again.

Image

The old peco track is being lifted and replaced with the very old Triang Super 4 track. The new plan is double track at this point so the signal box will have to be demolished. A spokesperson for the protest group said, 'It is an outrage that such a unique piece of architecture should be threatened because the rail way want to drag us back into the 1960s'.

At the other end of the station the tunnel boring machine (necessary to straighten the tunnel and make it wide enough) was late so Paddy Mc'Bodgeit laid into it with a sledge hammer. There was a major fall but luckily the castle (built by my 4 year old daughter 26 years ago) survived.

Image

I am experimenting with tracklay underlay. It is a sticky thick tape which sticks to the track and then you stick the ballast to it. No PVA adhesive required (well a smidgen along the edge).

Image

The track at the rear is the super 4 with tracklay (no shoulder yet) the track at the front is the peco track with ballast covered underlay. I quite like the underlay (by Noch I think) but it won't stretch to super 4 sleeper spacing. Sorry it is slightly out of focus!

Cheers Graham

Coming along very well, I like the castle ruins.

I have had the same problem on my layouts with cowboy builders just like you have with Paddy Mc'Bodgeit. :D

The platforms are too low. They were a bit low with the old Peco track but on Super 4 on Tracklay they are tiny. I though the spec was 3 feet above the railhead i.e. 12mm. Anyway I looked it up and the spec is 915mm - 3 feet!! There is an allowance of plus or minus an inch. So 12 mm above the railhead they are to be, I've lifted the only current platform and am extending the side walls!

Other progress today has been erecting the back scene support on the canal section, removing the track through the two crossings in the goods yard without damaging the stone work, and doing some papier-mache on the damaged bits.

I've also been playing my old record on the stereo - Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits and In Search of the Lost Chord by the Moody Blues.

Cheers Graham

Low platforms eh! A touch of Col Stephens I fear. :D It is looking good anyway. ------- apart from where Paddy McBodgeit gave you a hand :D
Dire Staits. ----- If I was playing them on my CD player nothing would get done. Why Worry, it's a Walk of Life So Far Away. Et al :D

More work today. The platform didn't survive removal so I started again. It is made from a Metcalfe kit. You build them upside down.

On turning the right way up I noticed that I had used too different shades of grey.

I got out my paintbrushes.

This is it in place.

Image

I like the loo.

Image

Track laying is going ahead

Image

I'm not sure what has happened in the goods yard, they are either having a rest or been shot by stray bullets from Jo's Wild West Camp.

There also seems to have been a bit of ballast washed out on the track behind the crane. Well, we have had a fair few floods done south in the past week.

Cheers Graham

It's coming along just great, I am very impressed with your platform building. Can you claim for the damage caused by the floods? :D
