We are not on about Kings' and Queens' here, but the legendary Welsh footballer John Charles himself! He was the BEST centre half AND the BEST centre forward in Britain (if not the world). No prima donna stuff, no diving because an opposing player looked at him. A shoulder charge was allowed without the opposing player rolling around the pitch for twenty minutes!!.
During his time at Leeds United he played in every position including goalkeeper! (He was reserve goalkeeper if the named goalkeeper was injured. No reserves on the bench those days.)
During his playing career, Wales had one of the best teams in the world and should have either won or at least been runners up at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.
When Leeds had to sell him the transfer record was £35,000. Arsenal, Manchester United and Sunderland offered £50,000. He was sold to Juventus for £75,000!!!
A great read. Loved reading every page. A book I shall read again!
As an aside. The first time I saw him play was in a reserve match a Elland Road. He was returning from injury. When news was announced that he was playing I was taken to the ground by my uncle. Only a few people would be there. After all it was a reserve match. The queue for the bus to the ground - I had never seen so many people. Special buses had to be put on. Over 24,000 people attended the game. Leeds beat Plymouth 4-2. King John scored twice
