A precious gem in my waterway collection of books, "Down River" by Geoffrey Boumphrey published in 1936 by George Allen & Unwin Ltd of Museum Street London. The book was sent to an unnamed person Christmas 1936 and signed by the author.
I almost certainly acquired this book in a collection of books purchased at a general auction in Wilmslow many years ago. This is the third time of reading and was just as enchanting as the first time,it relates to a canoe journey with his friend, from Newtown on the river Severn to two miles below Pangbourne on the Thames including the canoe-able part of the Thames and Seven Canal it is illustrated throughout with photo plates, fifteen in all. The authors descriptions of the journey show a very knowledgeable incite into the areas covered and the local flora and fauna.

I don't think the author of my book and the Shell book are one and the same?
The shell book of Inland waterways was written by Hugh McNight and I remember a tale he told of how he could never pass a second hand book shop. In one he found a very good copy of his own book which he had signed, taking it too the bookseller, with a dead pan face,he asked the price. The bookseller opened the book and saw the signature and said it been signed by the author that reduces the price! Still with a deadpan face he paid for it and was on his way.He was by this time a seller of S/H himself.
