BOATS AND CANALS

For those of you that may not be aware please do not let your garden ponds freeze over completely this is necessary to avoid the build up of harmful gases to your fish. There are many ways to avoid this, I leave my pump and filter running all the time although in some cases they can be turned off during the height of the winter months.

You only need a small hole but if your pond does freeze over you must NOT hit it with something to crack it, this can shock the fish. The safest way is to pour water on it, it can be warm, but must not be hot if there are any fish near where you are going to pour the water.

It also affects our cat. She drinks from the ponds and refuses any water left out in the kitchen so I have to leave water out in other rooms. Apparently they often think water near their food is tainted!

I haven't heard of that before, but I do know that animal behaviour can be unusual.

I have mentioned in an earlier post that birds won't eat the bird food that I put out for them, but they will eat fish food, so much so I don't buy bird food any more. Instead put fish food out for them and believe it or not they sit in the garden in the morning waiting for me to go out to them.
