Tomorrow is the collection day for our council recycling bin and on checking how much was in I noticed a box that I hadn't put in there, so I took it out to have a look what it was.

It was an online order that I have been waiting for, if I hadn't check the bin, it would have gone to the recycling plant tomorrow without me being any the wiser. Although I would have been chasing the supplier up for goods that I had paid for and not received.

If only the Royal Mail had pushed a card through my door to say it was in there, or is that asking too much.

It happened to us a couple of years ago. Went to put the warm ashes, from the night before, into the hot ash bin. Lo and behold a parcel lurking within.

Not expecting a parcel and checking it, the parcel was for a neighbour?

I also contact the supplier who have sent an apology, even though this was entirely out of their hands. They have also asked 'if I am happy for them to to make a complaint and forward on my details (name and address'). I have agreed for them to make a complaint and again await a response.

Dunno! Depends if you apologise to your postie for getting him into trouble or not :D

If you don't, bet you have to collect any packets or parcels from the Post Office :(

Received today from Royal Mail Customer Services

Dear Mr Brown

Thank you for contacting Royal Mail.

I'm very sorry to learn than an item of mail you have been expecting was left in the recycling bin and also there had not been a 'Something for you' card left to advise you of this. Please accept my sincere apologies for the concern this may have caused.

Of the huge volumes of letters and packets we handle, very few encounter a problem along their way - but we take every reported failure seriously.

I fully appreciate the inconvenience and delay we caused by failing to leave a card letting you know that we have something for you. It's important that our customers have confidence in us to always deliver their mail to a secure and high standard, so I apologise again that we have let you down.

I have passed these details to the manager of your local Delivery Office who will do all that is required to ensure you receive the quality of service you should expect in future.

Once again, please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of Royal Mail for the problem you've had, and our thanks for taking the time to make us aware of this. Please be assured that we take letting our customers down seriously and will use this information to make further improvements.

I hope you have found this information useful and that this explanation resolves your enquiry and conclude this matter for you. However if you are unhappy with my response you can contact the Escalated Customer Resolution Team who will re-investigate your complaint. They can be contacted by emailing: customerresolution@your.royalmail.com. Alternatively you can write to: Escalated Customer Resolution Team, Royal Mail, PO Box 466, Plymouth, PL9 7HJ. If you do contact the team please can I ask you to quote your reference number 1-3255335186.

Regards

Alison Walton

I have found that 'Whistl' is not a very reliable service either.
