What cruising guides are the best to use on the British canals system? Are there more than one? As with many things, one usually stands out as the most commonly used...

I hope I'm not going to start any kind of flame war amongst adherents to one or the other! I'm new to this...

I have always used and found the following very helpful.

The following guides cover various regions and all the canals in those regions.


Nicholson Waterway Guide/s

Pearson Canal Companion/s

Nicholson Ordnance Survey Inland Waterways Map of Great Britain.

These are not canal maps but they do come in handy if you don't know the areas and the canals are on them

Thank you! I'll check those out. Do they change much year to year (the Nicholson guides for instance)?

They are occasionally updated, but there is not usually much changed other than some local information, but not the actual canals/waterways information.
