The history of the narrow boat is intertwined with the history of the canal system. Narrow boats were originally built as working boats in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for carrying goods on the narrow canals. Since then, the narrow boat has evolved to include boats used for recreation and homes, which retain features of the original narrow boat design.
