Over the last week or so there have been many warnings about fast flowing water on the Avon, with advice not to navigate. Only navigate if you are experienced and your journey is essential.

And always have your anchor ready to deploy, on deck not stuffed away in some locker.

It's alright having an anchor ready to deploy, but, how many know how to use one on flowing rivers?
If you are going with the flow keep it at the stern. If you are running into the flow keep it at the bow.

Good advice, it goes without saying that the anchor should be firmly fixed to the boat and tied down with twine to prevent accidental deployment, a good sailor will always have a suitable knife attached to his/her belt.
