I found this post whilst doing something else.I have just returned to read the whole post there are some excellent pictures.I first navigated this canal up the nine locks in 1971 and onto the Ashton canal as far as the stanked off first aqueduct just round the corner from the junction with the Rochdale. Note to Maurice please move this whole post into the History section. |

There are ongoing discussions about closing off the City stretches of the canal in the evenings, for varied reasons. |

It is a small section from Dale St Basin just below the top lock (of the nine) up to Cateaton St. Due to vandalism in the seventies it was closed off by the canal company.It was reopened by BWB when they took over the management of the whole canal. It is no detriment to boater whatsoever in fact it makes it much safer.This part of the canal is covered by roads and buildings.The main vandalism was to the lighting that had been installed. |

I have been through there on a number of occasions, and it is prone to very low water levels.

I have been through on many occasions since 1971 and the biggest problem navigators have is too much water in order to open top gates it is sometimes necessary to open the bottom gate paddles and run the excess water down to reduce the level above the top gates. My best time down the nine along with another boat was 57 minutes,that was before BWB took over. |
