Oats, corn, or defrosted frozen peas should be given to ducks instead.

Feeding bread to ducks could destroy their habitats and cause the birds stress and misery, a charity has warned.
Instead of "junk food", the Canal & River Trust suggests oats, corn or defrosted frozen peas should be given to our feathered friends instead.

The trust claims that six million loaves of bread are thrown into canals and rivers every year, damaging hundreds of thousands of ducks' homes.

Feeding ducks bread could do more harm than good.

Soggy bread causes a unhealthy algae growth, spreads disease and encourages pests such as rats.

Feeding ducks with starchy snacks can also lead to overcrowding, stress and create excessive amounts of bird excrement.

Peter Birch, national environment manager for the Canal & River Trust, urged:
Please come and feed the ducks but do it sensibly so your children and future generations can enjoy it too.

The charity is asking the public to make a few simple changes. Bread's not great for a duck's health as it's nothing like their natural diet so don't over feed them with large quantities of it.

Don't follow the crowds, spread the love, and visit a new family of ducks to prevent large quantities of the starchy duck 'junk food' from clogging up the same places and potentially damaging the environment.

Try telling my grandsons' they cannot feed the ducks! The ducks have lived there for over thirty years since the ponds were built.

I imagine there will be a lot of people that will just carry on anyway. I must admit I did know this, it is the same for all birds. I feed the birds in my garden with the same food that I feed my pond fish, and they love it, so much so in the mornings they are waiting for me to go out.

i to was amazed at this article,my grandaughter always feeds the ducks.
we would go of to the swan at fradley in the summer and sit outside where she would feed the ducks with our old bread.
if its bad for them they seem to enjoy it, bit like us really should we be having that bacon butty in the morning. :D

As the C & RT are saying that feeding bread is destroying their habitats, it is the bird which is being harmed, Yes it causes it to be distressed by becoming ill. this illness is brought on by the bird not getting enough vitamins it would get by fending for itself naturally.
The reason that bread is bad for water fowl is given in the link above.

Help keep our ducks healthy. We're asking you to switch the white bread for healthier snacks next time you're feeding the ducks
