What is this?

It is a clamp which seems to clamp the rudder post to the rudder but the rudder seems to be welded on - so what does it do?

From the photos supplied it looks like it could be a temporary clamp which was placed around the rudder post following the rudder post being sheared at this point. It may well have been done as a temporary measure which could be carried out without dry docking or craning, but should have been replaced by a new rudder post at the earliest opportunity but has been forgotten about. Removal of the clamp should make this clear or not. If the post is not sheared then it is hardly doing anything. If the post is sheared then it needs replacing. Do not weld the break, it will not be strong enough, replacement although being costly will be the better option.

Keith, That sounds plausible. I undid it today and the post is fine so I have two theories.

1) Someone believes in belt and braces approach.
2) The rudder has sheared in the past and when the new post was put in the person doing it didn't realize the clamp was temporary.

I'm a having a bit of a dig into Dawn's history.

Cheers Graham
