The trail will follow the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and the Aire and Calder Navigation. It will stretch over 150 miles (241km), the Canal & River Trust charity has said.

More than 10,000 young people from some of England’s most deprived communities will help to transform 150 miles of canal, creating England’s first ever coast to coast canoe trail.

The distance by water from Liverpool to Goole is 161 miles and with 104 locks to portage they will get plenty of exercise. Recent reports have stated that the L/L is to be tarmacked over! in certain areas.

A NEW cycle 'super highway' is to be built to connect Leeds and Bradford, with the BBC telling us that 'the scheme also includes resurfacing parts of the Leeds Liverpool canal'!

Work has now started on this 14 miles 'super highway' that is costing £29 millions, Peter Fairhead tells us, but asks 'what will happen to the boats?'

Are you saying that canal is to be filled?

BBC News to me are becoming a joke. They said that Britain was sending warships to the Baltic? because of tension building in the Ukraine.??
No retraction of their error. No! They repeated it!

As we are going to St Petersburg soon, Lady G became rather worried.

So, as far as saying filling in Liverpool Liverpool in with tarmac does worry me WHO is saying these statements.

Dear Boats and Canals

Thank you for your email.

I have copied in the local team for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. They will be able to advise what works, if any, have been agreed as part of this project.

Dear Mr Brown

Further to recent correspondence with regard to the towpath regeneration project.

Work is currently underway to improve a significant stretch of the towpath Leeds Liverpool Canal between Shipley and Kirkstall. The works will focus on enhancing the surfacing of the towpath and washwall repairs will be undertaken where necessary. At no point will the works negatively impact on the canal channel itself – and you can be assured that no parts of the canal will be infilled as part of the works. The term Super Highway is based on the idea that West Yorkshire Metro promoted when bidding for these funds and refers to linking Leeds and Bradford along a defined corridor. This takes in both major roads, minor roads and also the canal. All partners to the scheme are aware that the canal provides a unique environment which is quite distinct from the highway network and the towpath is used by a wide range of people for a wide range of uses. You may find this link to the cityconnect website useful for your information http://www.cyclecityconnect.co.uk/events.php

All diversions and affected routes are shown on our website here. If there are any changes to this programme as the work progresses, then these will be reflected in that information through updates provided by our project management team. You can register to receive notification of these updates (as well as others) by signing up to our website here:-

You may also be interested in the wider City Connect project and further details can be found here http://www.cyclecityconnect.co.uk/index.php . Information relating to the towpath is also posted on here from time to time– however it is worth noting that this website is not managed by us or our project management team, and enquiries relating to those pages should be directed to the City Connect team at cityconnect@westyorks-ca.gov.uk

The recently announced Coast to Coast Canoe trail will be a fantastic opportunity for people to use the water more for canoeing through the creation of defined canoe trails. Once again no part of this will require the canal to be infilled and is very much dependent on keeping the water flowing. There may be some improvements to the infrastructure of the canal but these will be to help people get into and out of the canal itself with their canoes. We are hoping that this project will make a huge difference for many young people who live alongside the canal and we hope to increase our young volunteers who take an active part in celebrating and using their local canal.

I hope the above clarifies the works being undertaken and answers your enquiry, but should you need anything further please do not hesitate to contact us again.

With kind regards

Stephanie Lyons

Repeating myself from a previous post, BBC is becoming a joke in stating wrong information.

I did a news reporting course a while ago. It was 'hammered' into us make sure the facts were correct and not second guess anything.
