Such a tragedy, but it highlights even more the need for following safety guidance, even for the experienced boaters.

Only a fool would stand on the top of the boat,I am sure it is in the safety notes given to all boaters before entering the tunnel.
Having been through over a 100 times, including 9 times in one year, the first time with the towpath still in situe, was the the most daunting following the tunnel keepers dire warnings.Afterwards its just common sense.

Realy bad news, but stand ontop of the boat realy is silly, when all tunnel rules say "you must stay within the confines of the boat".

Now a coroner has called for safety improvements at the tunnel after hearing chilling details of the tragedy in May this year.

Would someone who ignores safety rules and common sense take notice of any further improvements?

I have been through the tunnel on many occasions and find the most important safety rule is driven by common sense.

I have read this reply with interest and feel that Point 3. Wearing of safety helmets could actually make safety worse not better, as with cycling there is a right and wrong way to wear a helmet. An ill fitting helmet or one that is not worn correctly is ineffective at least but is also more dangerous. In some tunnels headroom is already restricted, surely wearing a helmet will in effect reduce any clearance even more, and it could actually cause more accidents because generally people will not think about or even realise this.

Hopefully nothing will be done to spoil the heritage of the canals with safety measures for people that will ignore them any way.

It is simple: Be sensible and follow any instructions given and all will be safe.
