It seems there was a scary moment on the Thames on Tuesday. See http://rnli.org/NewsCentre/Pages/London-lifeboat-crew-rescue-four-people-after-narrow-boat-collides-with-a-houseb.aspx.

Cheers Graham

Good to see that the boat crew were rescued safely and no one was hurt, other than pride possibly.

This incident point out the need to be very vigilant in doubtful weather conditions.

When going down the Thames I always plan to be at my destination on high water slack even punching the tide from Teddington, for a short while. Going up its a good idea to let the tide run for a hour before setting off you will then arrive at Brentford or Teddington, if you don't go too fast and overtop the tide, at the right time.
The Thames is a great river to enjoy.

I got into serious trouble at Abingdon bridge during the floods a few years ago. Never been back on a river since.

The best time to run a tide is 1 hour before and 1 hour after high or low water this give you a 2+ hour window allowing for slack water, as this is when the tide is at it's slowest. In the 2nd hour it's speed increases 3rd & 4th are roughly the same at it's fastest before it starts to slow again. Strangly as it may seam this is called the rule of 12ths.
