Back in the dock today to fix the rudder. Hopefully I'll find my hammer on the bottom where I may have left it last time! Happy snaps to follow tonight. Cheers Graham

We've had a good day and manged to remove the rudder. The top bearing had disintegrated so had to be cut off and we had to grind flat was was left of the lower bearing surface on the skeg. Fortunately the middle bearing came off ok. Tomorrow we need to make a new seal, attach the repair section to the skeg and fit the new bearings.

Our first attempt at sealing the gates was met with a massive leak so we had to re-fill the lock, clear the sill and start again.

The leak

Our second attempt after I'd caulked the gates. It actually got a bit better later.

You can lift boards above the inlet paddle to caulk that too.

Duncan, our maintenance manager, is a wizz with an angle grinder and cut off the top bearing without touching the the rudder's shaft.

Success

The rudder is back on and Dawn has left the dry dock.

We used a combination of trolley jack and railway sleepers to jack the rudder into place. It was less precarious than it looks.

This is the reinforcing plate we've added to the skeg to replace the worn surface.

Image

We fitted two new bearings and had to make a rubber seal for the bottom one.

Image

They tried to drown me by shutting the lower sluice whilst I was in the dock!!

Image

Then there was the usual fun with rushing water.

Image

And we left the dock.

Image

We cruised up to Mytchett via Deepcut.

This is the deep cut that gives the area its name.

The canal authority have been putting in new moorings to try and make the canal more boater friendly.

A different crew are taking the boat to Odiham tomorrow so i can have a day off.

Cheers Graham

We do have a slight snag. Fallen trees stopped her getting back to Odiham and now the Dogmersfield cutting has slipped closing the canal and Dawn is stuck on the wrong side. We are hoping to get through or we will have to move our operation to another base. This I'd difficult as there isn't one!

Cheers Graham
