Image Description: | Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal. It was originally the site of the first stone arch aqueduct over the River Irwell, built by James Brindley. When the River Irwell was canalised to make the Manchester Ship Canal ('Big Ditch'), the aqueduct had to be rebuilt to allow for larger boats to pass underneath. The solution was to build a swinging aqueduct, this was unique on the waterways. The aqueduct can still be seen operating on a daily basis. |
